Since its beginning in the early Nineties, Droog has been redefining notions of luxury. Luxurious goods do not have to be about precious materials, elaborate handcraft and exclusive labels. They can be made of the most ordinary materials with simple means. A chair made of 200 sheets of paper, a bench that plays music, 85 ordinary light bulbs bunched together to make an opulent chandelier.

This exhibition reveals the luxuries of imagination and pleasure. The works cherish the leftovers of our everyday world as well as the rich heritage of the past. Old drawers are haphazardly held together with a strap to become a chest of drawers, yet this piece is the of collections of numerous museums around the world. A lavishly decorated historical silver centrepiece from the Rijksmuseum collection has been reinterpreted in steel with decorations that are 3D printed and magnetic.

These products do not need to be executed in extravagant materials because they have something else to offer: a twist, a wink, something unexpected that breaks routine and makes them engaging. A fallen tree can serve as a bench, but it is the combination with classic bronze chair backs that makes it exclusive. An aquarium makes you look twice because there is a miniature restaurant in it.

The exhibition design carries on the idea of the project itself. Using wooden industrial pallets instead of expensive custom equipment is an intentional step and an approach that Droog has been taking for its exhibition projects for several years.

New Luxuries presents a range of products of humble richness in our everyday experience. Not so much more is more, or less is more, as less and more.
