DANISH DESIGN, SOCIETY AND CULTURE

On May 17 at 7 p.m. Anne-Louise Sommer, the Director of the Designmuseum Danmark and adjunct professor of the University of Southern Denmark, author of books and publications on Danish design, is giving a lecture as part of the educational program of the exhibition Legends of Danish design.

In her lecture 'Danish Design, Society and Culture' Anne-Louise Sommer will focus on Danish furniture design and the designers’ respect for traditions while using modern technology methods. This key feature guarantees the quality and originality of products.

The famous Designmuseum Danmark was conceived as an ‘educational center’ for local producers and artisans. The museum’s collection, library, and archives became a Mecca for designers, and an important source of information. Opened to the general public in 1895, it was also supposed to shape and form good taste. Currently, the richest collection at the Designmuseum Danmark includes works of decorative and applied art, and samples of industrial design all over the world from the Middle Ages to the present.

Anne-Louise will also describe tradition of Danish design and its impact on contemporary designers, and the role of the Designmuseum Danmark in the life of a country.

Anne-Louise Sommer: “To define Danish design culture more specifically, a key feature is the emphasis on quality and sustainability in the sense of design that is durable, anchored in tradition and identity-building. Danish design is rarely intended as “high-end” design but has a toned-down expression and a genuine and unpretentious appearance”.
